Seaweed-derived calcium, specifically sourced from red algae (Lithothamnion) found in the ocean near the coast of Iceland, is used as an Acid Buf in certain supplements. Lithothamnion has a unique honeycomb structure, which provides a large surface area of more than 10m2 per gram. This structure allows for a slow release of bio-available minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and silicon.
The slow release of minerals from Lithothamnion makes it an effective buffering agent. It has been observed to have a longer buffering action compared to other commonly used substances such as limestone or sodium bicarbonate. This means that it can help regulate acidity levels in the digestive system for an extended period.
Studies have shown that Lithothamnion exhibits significant buffering action for around 4-6 hours under simulated in vitro stomach digestion conditions. This indicates its potential to neutralise excessive stomach acid, promoting a more balanced pH in the digestive tract.
Additionally, Lithothamnion has been found to stimulate in vitro hindgut fermentation activities. This suggests that it may have a positive impact on the microbial population and activity in the hindgut, which is important for optimal digestion and nutrient absorption.
It's important to note that while seaweed-derived calcium can be a valuable component of Ulcabuf and other similar supplements, it should be used as part of a comprehensive approach to equine digestive health. This may include appropriate feeding practices, forage quality, and management strategies. Consulting with a veterinarian or equine nutritionist is recommended to ensure the most suitable use of Ulcabuf or any supplement containing seaweed-derived calcium for your horse's specific needs."My 6 year old's whole demeanor had changed to the point of her becoming dangerous to
approach, rug, feed, catch etc., let alone ride!
Then, three weeks ago I started feeding her UlcaBuf.
I changed nothing else. Two weeks in and she was
a different horse! She is friendly and happy to see
me and almost even sooky!
I am so impressed with your UlcaBuf, that I would
recommend it whole heartedly. Thank you so
much."- Sharyn
