Ulcers are a commonly spoken about topic in the horse world. Gastric, or stomach, ulcers are sores that form on the stomach lining. Ulcers can affect horses of any age, breed, or sex, and the leading causes can include heavy work, nutrition, feeding practices, and stabling. Unfortunately the prevalence of ulcers in horses is very high with 90% of all performance horses having had ulcers at one point during their life.
Symptoms are very broad and can include:
The reason behind why ulcers can be so prevalent in horses is partly due to the fact that they have a small stomach in comparison to other species. Therefore they cannot handle large amounts of food infrequently. Horses are built to graze constantly and consume small amounts of food often. In this natural grazing routine, a steady flow of acid is needed for digestion, so the horse's stomach is constantly producing acid.
In a natural diet, high in roughage, this acid is buffered by feed and saliva. However when horses are only fed twice a day, the stomach has a longer time without feed to neutralize this acid and therefore ulcers can result. We as horse owners, have changed the natural feeding routine of horses and as a result, ulcers are now more common.
Supporting your horse in preventing ulcers can include providing them with continuous grazing, maximise forage intake, limit feeding high sugar/starches (grains), provide plenty of fresh drinking water, feeding lucerne prior to riding to prevent acid splash and adding a supplement aimed at supporting digestive health and ulcer prevention to their diet.
"Hey I just wanted to let you know I picked up a small 1kg bucket of UlcaBuf to get my horses started on it and my extremely girthy / very dramatic about it gelding who is constantly fighting ulcers. After 48hrs on UlcaBuf I put his saddle on today and as always carefully and slowly cinched him and it's the first time in a very very long time he didn't blow apart!!! Words cannot describe how amazed and grateful I am to this product! I'm super stoked with it. Frosty is never coming off it ever!!! Amazing" Lou Harris
"In my time working as a professional rider I have dealt quite a few times with new horses that came in with stomach ulcers and it really took a while to figure out how to deal with it. So many options, As a preventative I have finally found a successful product in Stance Equitec UlcaBuf, that actually does what it says. It is a seaweed derived calcium based supplement that will neautralise the PH levels in the gut and hindgut. This together with a high fibre diet and slippery elm powder has really made a difference for my horses and my client's horses that have dealt with stomach ulcers. The results are astounding."- Marvin Smink
"My 6 year old's whole demeaner had changed to the point of her becoming dangerous to approach, rug, feed, catch etc., let alone ride!
Then, three weeks ago I started feeding her UlcaBuf. I changed nothing else. Two weeks in and she was
a different horse! She is friendly and happy to see me and almost even sooky!
I am so impressed with your UlcaBuf, that I would recommend it whole heartedly. Thank you so much."- Sharyn
